Gravestone Rubbing Ring

125.00

I grew up about 40 minutes south of Boston, MA and when I was a kid, my mother frequently brought us to an old graveyard that was a few minutes from our house and to some of the much older graveyards around Salem. She showed my sister and I (and my Girl Scout troop) how to make grave stone rubbings. I found it relaxing in the grave yard. It's always quiet and serene and the images I would get with my chalk on the newsprint were sometimes clearer than on the stone themselves. I always liked the older ones best - they mostly ranged from somewhere late 1600's to late 1800's. The oldest ones were more primitive and worn, but all of my favorites were topped with a skull and wings. Even after my mother stopped taking us, I would go to make rubbings. In high school at some point, I did one that I really loved and hung it over my bed. It freaked my father out, but something about it was just so beautiful to me. These were made to resemble my favorite old graves, but also as memento mori (Latin for "remember you have to die") ~ it's a symbolic reminder of mortality. Wear them to connect to your own mortality or to remember the passing of another.

These are being offered in sizes 3 - 13, hand made entirely of fine and sterling silver.
