Modern Halo, 14K gold and Black Diamond

I've been adding a "halo" to my skulls in recent creations. It's partly, purely from a design point of view - a floating skull kind of calls for one - right? But i've been thinking deeper into what a halo is to me and what it means to other people. These ones (in this batch of making) haven't been just added from a design point of view.

Halos used to be used in religious art to symbolize the light of God. Different kinds of halos implied different levels of holiness. For example, in Christian art, a black halo was reserved for Judas or, more sinister implications - for Lucifer. A square halo was used for a living "saintly" person and the etherial, thin line halo, was typically reserved for depictions of Jesus and Mary. Halos saw a decline in religious iconography with the rise in popularity of realism. While I would be absolutely delighted if you chose to wear one of my haloed pieces with religious intentions (of any kind), I think its important, particularly because religion is so sensitive and personal, to know why I've added halos to these pieces. I've been thinking about the things that surround us - the media, our fast paced lives, etc, and I realized that I live a whole lot in my own head. I mean - despite the fact that we are SO connected all the time - most of us are alone for the majority of the day - even when we are amongst other people. Anyway - my halos here are meant to be pieces pieces of us - thoughts, our inner monologues, fleeting pieces of dream that effects our waking - rather than the light of God. I have it pared pared with the ever present symbol - memento mori - the reminder that we all, eventually must die. We can't take anything with us when we die, but maybe those thoughts - fleeting dreams - stay somewhere in the atmosphere rather than disappearing when we do.

Anyway - thanks for reading that and if any of it made any sense to you - you must be a kindred spirit. ;)
